CGRundertow DOOM 3 BFG EDITION for Xbox 360 Video Game Review

Hi Russ here for cgrundertow, its seems to
be all the rage nowadays to port old games to new systems, give them a poor transfer
and barely upscale them for HD. However for Doom 3 BFG this is not the case,
this is not just a port of Doom 3. In many ways this is the best version of Doom 3 on
the market. When Doom 3 first hit the market way back
when in 2004, it was met with mixed criticism. However I found Doom 3 to be an excellent
shooter with great visuals and fantastic atmosphere. The gameplay is largely unchanged, however
there has been two tweaks to the gameplay. One now finally you can use the flashlight
and your weapon at the same time. While most complained about this when Doom
3 was first released, I for one liked being limited to one or the other. It gave tension
and kept you on edge. And no there is no option to let you use the flashlight like before. Most people will like being able to use both,
for me though i preferred using them separately. The other change is ammo is far less scarce
than before. Now ammo is plentiful and easy to find. These two changes which seem small on paper,
change things more than one would think. Now the game focuses on the action and less on
the horror elements. Combat is fun and satisfying with fantastic
weapons, the enemy A.I is also very smart and keeps you on your toes. In fact the A.I
is better than you will see in most current games. However the horror elements and great atmosphere
are still there, in addition to those changes, the entire game was given a facelift and textures
were greatly improved. The game admittedly does look out of date,
but is still rather impressive. Doom 3 is still a great shooter with fantastic enemies,
great level design, and superb boss fights. Doom 3 plays far differently from the shooters
released today, if you’re sick of iron sights and liner set pieces Doom 3 has you covered. Not only are you getting Doom 3 but your getting
Resurrection of Evil the first expansion pack, and the lost missions, an entire new set of
levels. Along with Doom 1 And 2. This is the most
complete set you will find for the Doom series. And for 40 dollars you get tons of content. If you never played Doom 3 now is the perfect
time to catch up on the entire series. Few games have the atmosphere and fantastic combat
Doom 3 has. If you like First Person Shooters don’t miss
one of the most important ones gaming has to offer.

If you have doom3 on the original Xbox then your getting the shrunk down abbreviated levels, the 360 version has the full extended PC styled levels from doom3.

    Reply
  • reptomicus

Plays similar, but the level layout is different. There are more extended areas like on the PC version. If you only played on in the original xbox, some areas are highly condensed.

  • Ingenium

oh god don't think that the xbox version was the "complete" version. it was overall worthless crap compared to the pc version. this is more like the pc version with numerous addons and doom 1 and doom 2

so what you are saying Doom 3 on Xbox was missing content (or level structure) as seen in the PC version and that the BFG Edtion is the PC version with upscaled graphics to make the BFG Edition the definitive console version of Doom 3.

    Reply
  • reptomicus

Yes. Though the Resurrection of Evil expansion wasn't trimmed like Doom 3 was. Mostly downscaled graphics on that one.

  • The ZombieMan

well that's great, good thing I never had an Xbox then because now that I have come into Doom 3 BFG Edition its great to know what I'm getting can be credited as the definive version of Doom on home consoles along with being a compilation of some of the best designed shooters to exist for a an amazing deal

cod is shit and overrated. This is a collection of all three doom games which are all awesome. cod is the same every game with a few different guns from game to game. The campaign is too short and boring and they are just making money by repackaging the same game every year.

firstly, learn to spell, secondly learn to use an apostrophe in aren't (also don't forget the e). also, you have no idea what my favorite game is as my favorite game could have sold more than cod has. maybe cod is the most popular franchise at the moment it wasn't always that way. The most sold game of all time is actually not a cod game. So don't just assume that cod sells more than my favorite game because my favorite game was released a long time before cod.

I was happy when you said it was better than cod but as you were joking you are just another 'gamer' who cares more about graphics than gameplay.

I love Doom 3 and this is a good remastering. My two complaints are with the new flashlight mechanics and the fact the battery runs out so quickly. It's silly and restricting, and I also enjoyed having one or the other in the original. It also made a great instant-access melee weapon, perfect for killing zombies without wasting ammo. The chainsaw comes into the game about halfway but at least on consoles the weapon switching is too cumbersome for quick changes.

The weapon switching is actually very fast. You can swap between 6 guns in the time it would take for others shooters to swap 1.

  • donkeyIips

yes why does the flashlight drain so quickly? doesn't make any sense. real flashlights can stay on for hours. other than that, this was an awesome game. but its a shame the multiplayer only allows 4 players in a session at one time.

Doom may be dated but it defined the first person shooter genre. Even though there are plenty of prettier shooters out there I never get tired of it.

    Reply
  • FRLIVE

Honestly, I wouldn't be able to bear playing BFG edition. The mounted flashlight and more ammo differences would just change the whole experience for me. Doom 3 in my opinion was MEANT TO BE PLAYED the way it was released, but nobody said the Slikmod 1.1 mod for more beautiful graphics needs no attention. That mod makes the game a piece of art, and itself is much greater in high definition than the BFG edition is.

Not everyone has a good enough PC to do that. Most gaming PCs either require a lot of time to assemble one (something not everyone has), or require huge amounts of money to get a pre-made one.

This is the first time console players will get the full version of Doom 3.

  • Paranoia Rising

That "lots of time" you're talking about is 2-3 hours at most, and doesn't need to be done all at once. If you're that incredibly busy, then maybe you should rethink how you prioritize things rather than just playing videogames.

    Reply
  • gameragodzilla

Yeah, I prioritize my work and education rather than spending time building a PC so I can play a slightly prettier looking game.

When I play games, I want to spend as much time playing them and as little time getting them to work. That wastes the least time so I can go and do more useful things.

    That's called prioritizing.

Sounds more like addiction to me if you can't take an hour or two to NOT play videogames and instead greatly enhance the experience for the next time you do play.

    Reply
  • Paranoia Rising

No, 2-3 hours is if you read the instructions for the motherboard and plug everything in where it belongs.

    Reply
  • gameragodzilla

Spending all that time and money does not "greatly" enhance my gaming experience. All it does is allow me to play a slightly prettier looking game. Not worth the time nor the money.

    Reply
  • Paranoia Rising

I dont think you understand what you can do with PC games. It may be "slightly prettier" to you, until you mod it, make it look three or four times better than any console could handle, add new maps, levels, weapons, completely rework the game from the ground up, and plenty more. The amount of user made content on PC trumps the amount of actual games out there. You spent money on a console which is only slightly cheaper than a better PC, you're so addicted that you can't stop playing for an hour

    Reply
  • gameragodzilla

Ah yes, mods. They can be fun, and I have modded games before, but as amateur made content, they're never up to par with professional work. After a while, even mods lose their fun.

    Reply
  • Paranoia Rising

They're quite often better. Especially when they add more content in general. The majority of bethesda's games would be completely unplayable if not for the mod community, and other games are given unofficial patches, bug fixes, and rebalances that greatly improve on the original game.

…What happened to the lighting? It looks totally static, the 'improvements' to the game seem to miss the point of the original game completely infavor of trying to let more people in, but I don't think they were ever interested if they didn't like Doom 3 in the first place.

  • DarkStarAngelo

It's not really worth it for PCs but it's great for consoles, I'm a PS3 gamer for the most part and getting all the trophies was so satisfying, while I love to play Doom 3 on the PC for mods like Fragging Free and what-not. There are way too many modern shooters on consoles nowadays so I think a grand re-release of Doom 3 is such a breath of fresh air for once. With that said there is also Painkiller: Hell and Damnation and that definitely looks like it's worth it on the PS3!

doom 3 bfg edition was released most likely because rage didn't do all that well and the next game there probably going to release is doom 4 so this is basically funding for it and if this is true all the people saying it wasn't necessary will be like "wwwwwhhhhhaaaaaatttttt 0_0" and this is a theory not a fact 🙂

I liked the game but the issue I have with it is that the game didn't feel worth it considering I ended up shelling out money for the original doom 3 and even the expansion back in 2005. Lost levels many would argue to be the only reason why one would ever buy this game. I bought it just because I kinda got sick of playing my shitty xbox original console port of doom 3 with all the good stuff and extras cut out just to save Emory and frame rate.

this review is kinda misleading…if you want to buy this game to be able to play a remastered HD version of doom 3 thinking of a retouched, modified and overall improved content (like i did), you will be disappointed. aside from the flashlight change, nothing else was touched in a meaningful way.
the textures look very bad on a big tv. the 3D is the only one of all my 3D games that does not work properly on my setup.(very bad crosstalk, noticeable lag)
it realy does not feel like it was put much effort to justify this package. specially if you consider that on the pc for years now there are mods that do all that much better and for free.  as an compilation of doom content its ok, but doom 3 is not remastered at all.

It may not be as fantastic as Doom 1 & 2, but it's enjoyable.
I have ONLY 2 PROBLEMS WITH THE BFG EDITION:
    1) NO ONE PLAYS ONLINE
    2) WAY TOO MUCH AMMO*

*Seriously, I was expending ammo left and right the majority of the game. By the time I got to the CyberDemon and the end of the game, I had HUNDREDS of rounds in each gun. The rocket launcher had over 200 rounds. I'm all up for a LITTLE more ammo, but HUNDREDS PER GUN!?!?!? That's too damn much.

I grew up playing this game thinking it was both terrifying and amazing. Playing it now ten years later it does get very monotonous. Fighting other enemies with weapons never feels fun or engaging and it just sucks most of the time. I still really like this game though even though it isn't really a Doom game.

Kind of disappointed with the bfg edition. It's good that ps3 and 360 owners were able to get there hands on it however.

I hated the abundance of ammo and the graphics wernt spectacular. It didn't add anything new either.

Personally I stick to the base game with the perfected doom 3 mod. The mod upscales the graphics 10 fold and even adds new features including: new enemies, overhauled weapons, enhanced sound effects, new hell areas and is much more difficult to beat this time around. I recommend sticking to the base game on pc, the plethora of mods available just give you countless options and i think perfected doom 3 is the definitive way to play the game.
