LGR – Undertale – PC Game Review

[♪ Music Intro ♪] Greetings, and welcome to another LGR Quickie! And today, I would like to take a look at Undertale. A game that you might have seen
if you’ve been paying attention to the gaming news sites and just general hubbub at the end of September,
beginning of October of 2015. Because this game just sort of came out… of nowhere, at least for a lot of people, and myself included, and, all of a sudden, it was at the top of the charts. And people are calling it the best PC game of like all time. So what is it about Undertale that makes it such an impressive thing? Because if you just take a look at it… You might think, “Well, this is a pretty typical looking
top-down 8-bit JRPG adventure thingy… that just still looks like it was made
by a dude in GameMaker Studio or something” and… [Amused] Well, it was! [Chuckles] It was made by one guy: Toby Fox,
and he made it in GameMaker Studio. It’s obviously taking a lot from the
8-bit Final Fantasy games and maybe even a bit of like, Earthbound, Mother, and Shin Megami whatever the heck tho- I don’t play any of those,
so this really didn’t interest me at the beginning. It’s a style that I’m not hugely into,
but man, I am glad that I took a look at it because this is one of the most enjoyable…
different experiences. There’s a big twist as far as how
you handle progressing through this adventure. So you play this little androgynous kid,
there’s like a world of monsters and people, and… but, when you come across a monster or a person, or you know, just whatever you have to do,
some sort of creature to take out, you would typically do this in your sort of
turn-based JRPG sort of fashion. And you can do that!
You can just you know, get your weapons and fight them or whatever. But there’s an option that lets you do something different and that is… Addressing every confrontation through socializing. [Chuckles] It’s a wonderful thing!
And I highly recommend playing through the game like that. I just like games that allow pacifist runs like this anyway,
but this is done in such a way that I have just never seen before. I’ve seen little bits and pieces of it maybe touched on in other games,
but never as explicitly as this one, and it really makes you think about what you’re doing
every single time you do anything. So you can come across like a ghost,
for instance, that was really depressed, and you could just stab it,
but you could also talk to the ghost and see why it’s feeling bad
and maybe encourage it and console the ghost and make it feel a little better,
cheer it up and… [chuckles] There’s like a blob you’ll come across,
and the blob is kinda flirtatious and you can wiggle kind of sexily,
and the blob will be like “Ooh, yeah!” And it’ll just… it’ll think you’re it’s mate or something
and you can let the blob go and no harm will be done,
you can progress in the game and nobody is killed. When you are killing things, the game is just like,
“Ah man, you’re awful.” And when you are doing all these other things,
it makes you question that too. It’s just like, well, why are you rolling over so easily?
Why are you… not fighting? I mean, come on, what kind of- what horrible adventurer are you? And it just turns all of these different tropes and conventions and gameplay mechanics on their head, which is fascinating. It is done in a way that is hugely emotional and impactful at least to me because [chuckles] it made me feel like for the dumbest things, you know? There’s a dog you come across and he’s in armor.
And you have to- you can pet the dog and you know, give it some treats or whatever
and some different things like that, that are just like… “Wow.” I don’t think of any of these kind of things happening in a game like this. I mean, it’s just one little thing after another like that. The little puzzles too, that you have- puzzles, I guess. It’s more like a bullet hell,
sort of Touhou-style shooter thing that goes on when you do a fight or even just a, you know,
the socializing part of the combat. Every single fight is gonna be some different amalgamation of that. So it’s not just the talking and everything. You have to do a little bit of uh,
dexterity/skill kind of challenge as well. You never know what’s going to come at you. It’s just… one of those games that it
absolutely kept me engaged through it’s sheer… lack of fear of doing things differently and then just… experimenting with it, but not in a way that’s so experimental that it turns you off to it. It’s in a very welcoming, inviting,
and friendly, wonderful kind of campy way. And it only costs $10! I completely recommend it. Some people are saying it’s the game of the year.
I’m not sure I’d go that far, but it is highly interesting and just so unique and enjoyable. I cannot help but recommend it entirely,
so check out Undertale if you get a chance. It’s awesome! Huge shout-out and thank you to Andy
for sending me a copy of this on Steam. Uh, that was awesome of you, so thanks dude, very much! Also, just thank you very much, for watching my videos and hopefully, if you like this one, maybe you like to catch some of my others. I’ve got a couple linked here at the end you can click on or just subscribe if you would like to see more in the future. And there’s always Twitter and Facebook and Patreon if you like to do those kind of other things on the Internets. And, as always, thank you very much for watching, once again.

I was originally turned off by the aesthetics of the game plus I originally saw it on my tumblr/twitter feeds. So I was anticipating another Mortis Ghost – "OFF" which I honestly thought was avant-garde BS : Super glad I tried Undertale and kept playing though because I absolutely loved it!
(edit: calling OFF BS is too harsh I think, but I still didn't find it near as good as the level of praise it got.)

I'm really surprised I ended up enjoying this game so much. I'm on my genocide run now, and can say that it's easily one of the best games I've ever played. It might even top Bloodborne as my favourite game of the year.

Again people overeact. It's not really game for everyone, but everyone will have different playthrough that another. Undertale is mostly an experience. An amazing experience. But how it should be rated? That's up to interpretation.

Just played the demo and… meh. I'm not a fan of JRPGs or bullet hell shooters, and this is a nightmarish combination of the two. Fight or talk your way out of it, it's still a repetitive tedious trial of random turn based encounters. I fought everything on the demo first time round and just got bored half way through a 'pacifist' playthrough.

It is the game of the year in a combining, gender neutral genre (if that makes sense). If you are totally not into rpgs at all, then of course you have other favorite, some might even consider a racing game a game, I mean a game of the year, but If you combine all the crap and all the best that came out in 2015, then Undertale stands out besides all of them.

Thanks for the video. This is a game that everyone should check out.

Alongside games like The Stanley Parable and 80 Days, I'm glad developers are creating games which take interactive experiences one step further.

The shooting and killing stuff paradigm has been around since Space Invaders days and there's so much more that can be done. Games should be about optional violence, engaging storytelling which cannot be achieved in other media, decisions that really matter and Undertale is crearly a success regarding all that.

Hmm, might be interesting but I like da graphics. I can't play a game that looks this bad. I'm not a snob, a snob would think people who do are lesser whereas I don't give 2 damns what other people play. No amount of hype could make me look at that for any given amount of time though. Back when I was on the 8 bits all I did was dream of the day when games would look like they do now and I've no desire to go back. I like watching LGR review all these old games for nostalgia sake but I'm done playing them.
    Thanks.

it's important to distinguish between one's favorite game of the year and the best game of the year. we're all used to sensationalist clickbait statements and titles that lose perspective in a sea of hyperbole
I would say that undertale is my favorite game this year. I wouldn't say that it's the best overall game this year. I just really really like it more than anything else.

So many people (in the comments, around the web) seem afraid to openly call this their pick for favourite or best game of the year. I'm trying to pin-point why people have a problem with doing that?

I remember (in school) there was always a divide between kids who liked music that required a high level of technical skill to create (e.g. metal) and those who preferred music more raw/with more emotional depth (e.g. alternative, grunge etc.). Those who preferred music that required a high level of technical skill would argue it's better because it's "difficult to play" (required more understanding/graft to create) but the others would argue that it's worthless if the music is superficial (lacking something to say, not provoking some emotional response).

Is it the same case here, where people think there's less worth in something created with a basic toolset and limited scope? The story, gameplay, characters etc. have gotten almost universal praise, but the lack of technical flare makes it unworthy?

Why is this less worthy of praise than something like Fallout 4?

I get that the elements of the game are cool but imho, this game absolutely fails stylistically.. I mean come on. it's 2015. This game would have been worlds better if more effort was put into the spritework and gameplay… Now I'll say right off the bat that I haven't played this very much, but I just feel that it's lacking in too many areas. I do have to give Toby props tho cuz in terms of the atmospheric elements he fucking nailed it.

I gave this game a fair shake but the gameplay is far too tedious for me to deal with. Unlike your experience I felt like my lack of experience and fondness for JRPGs was detrimental to my enjoyment of Undertale. I couldn't force myself to care enough to tolerate the gameplay and its quirky style really didn't do anything for me.

Nah, but it was definitely a unique experience and I personally enjoyed it more than a lot of AAA games that came out last year. The characters, music, and gameplay really make this game a must-play.

undertale is bad because it forces you to choose good. why? because it has a sociological "moral compass' to ensure that you are either bad or good. Good being only good and bad being anything that isn't good. therefore. the game is bad because it is trying to make you follow a rigid "moral jumpsuit" style of play.

Interesting game. But clearly not the best game ever. I've played it and I don't think it's that special. If there was one thing I liked about this game it was the humor. Gameplay was ok, story was pretty cool, some of the characters were nice and well developed, but others were just weird for the sake of weird in my opinion. And to think that this game competed against The Witcher 3 for the Game of the Year award… HAH! Please…

What about how the game is incredibly self-aware?–even after you start a new game the characters will recognize that its not the first play through and they will act differently depending on how you played the previous game (pacifist, homicide, etc). Also how pacifist run you gain money from defeating an enemy through socializing but no exp which can make it challenging, but if you do kill creatures and gain exp it gets easier to defeat enemies and you get super OP but then you face a nearly impossible boss battle at the end of the game. There is so much to undertale that just makes it such a great game–not to mention all the charm and emotional resonance it provides
